Dorris Place Fine Arts Fest – Friday, May 24th

More than just art and music…
A Celebration of Creativity and Expression through Music and Art

Last year we had an incredible Art Expo and exhibited a lot of amazing art by the entire Dorris Place student body as well as local artists in an outdoor gallery art walk setting. The exhibitions included sculptures, portraits, post impressionism, studies in nature, abstract displays as well as interactive stations across various mediums and styles. It was a lot of fun and this year, we are bringing back all of the favorites including the Michelangelo inspired simulated ceiling painting, Jackson Pollack as a matter of splatter station, as well as an updated string musical instrument “petting zoo.”

In addition, to all of the wonderful art, we are extremely excited, honored, and proud to introduce the debut performance of the inaugural Dorris Place Student Strings Orchestra. After countless and tireless hours of fund raising, grant writing, community building, and hours of music lessons and rehersals with our dedicated musical education partners ETM-LA (Education Through Music – Los Angeles) we will be ending the school year on a high note with a wonderful celebratory concert. The special musical concert will include performances by:
– Student String Orchestra (violins and cellos) – 4th, 5th and 6th Graders led by ETM-LA
– Recorder Brigade (recorder instruments) – 3rd graders led by ETM-LA
– The Flute Club – mixed grades lead by Ms. Marsh
– The Choir Club – mixed grades lead by Ms. Gordon

The video slide show tells the story of how Dorris Place Elementary School got it’s musical instrument program (back). Thank you POD parents, community leaders and volunteers, corporate partners, Dorris Place teachers, staff, students, family, friends and supporters. Your donations, contributions, and tireless effort are changing the lives of every child from K-6 by ensuring that they have the opportunity and benefits of music education. Our heartfelt thanks for all of your help to make this dream into a reality and with special recognition to Elysian Valley Riverside Neighborhood Council, Education Through Music – Los Angeles, Metzler Violin Shop, Ms. Gordon for leading the choir and Ms. Marsh for creating the Dorris Place Flute Club and being so dedicated to sharing the gift of music to the Dorris Place family.

Be sure to join us this Friday, May 24th after school to take part in all of the interactive art fun. There is FREE admission to the Art Expo and Art Walk which takes place from 2:30pm until 6pm. Also, don’t forget to purchase your tickets for the student musical performance. Tickets can be purchased in advanced for $5 at Dorris Place School; tickets will also be available at the door if not sold out. The two musical performances are scheduled for 4:30pm – 5:30pm and 6pm – 7pm. See below for more details on the event.

2nd Annual Tiger Training Day Fitness Fair & Walkathon

Pledge Deadline Extended to Thursday, May 23rd!!

Last Friday’s Fitness Fair was awesome! You ALL did a great job, tried your best, and looked great in your orange Tiger t-shirts. Many thanks to POD, parent, community and staff volunteers as well as Ms. Mendez’ 6th graders for helping out to make the Fitness Fair such a successful event.

2nd Annual Tiger Training Fitness Fair & Walkathon

We had so much fun getting fit and raising funds for the Physical Education fund last spring we are rallying together to do it again this year. We will combine this year’s efforts with what raised last year and hopefully reach our goal so that we can provide the kids the P.E. teacher they deserve.

Transforming The Tigers’ Garden

Urgent Call for Parents, Family, Friends, and Community Members
The Gift of a Garden with Support from YOU
and POD’s Generous Corporate Partner Home Depot

As part of Home Depot’s commitment to education in local schools, they have partnered with POD, (Partners of Dorris) and Dorris Place School to breathe new life into the Tigers’ Garden.  This overwhelmingly generous gift will include Home Depot workers, soil, structural fencing, raised beds, wood chips, paver stones, trees, and more.  The only thing they are asking for in return is that we match them in manpower.  Since we cannot afford to pass on such a generous gift we are reaching out to all of you and anyone you may know who would selflessly volunteer to strip away much of what currently exists, safe guard what is salvageable, and help us build and plant that which is new.  We are in need of of 10 volunteers on Wednesday and Thursday, and 20 on Friday.  With an API of 884, new library, new music program, and our historical landmark main building, we at Dorris Place School want to make sure the children of this community have the best possible resources at their fingertips to raise their spirits and aspirations to greater and greater heights.  Thank you so much for your continued support and effort on behalf of our kids, our school, and our Elysian Valley community.

Success: Fun for all Fall Festival
We owe success of the 2012 Fall Festival FUNdraiser to the incredibly generous support of our POD volunteers, parents, teachers, staff, students, alumni, neighbors, community leaders, Recreation Center, multiple Key Clubs, local businesses, corporate partners, and to all those who came to enjoy our event. Your donations, contributions, and tireless effort are changing the lives of every child from K-6 by ensuring that they have the opportunity and benefits of music education. This means you are now part of our Dorris Place Family, and we are eternally grateful to you all. Our heartfelt thanks for all of your help to make this music program a reality!

Pre-Sale Tickets Now On Sale!

Dorris Place Elementary School’s annual Fall Festival FUNdraiser is just around the corner and scheduled for Friday, October 26, 2012 from 2:30pm until 8:00pm. This community-wide Fall Festival Fundraiser is crucial to us as it is our one opportunity to fund an instrumental music program and to bring the arts back to our deserving K-6th grade students. Due to the $600 million LAUSD budget deficit, fine arts have been slashed in our public elementary schools. We look forward to your support and have a special offer for those who purchase their tickets in advance. When you purchase a $5 pack of tickets you get $1 in tickets free – that comes out to getting twelve tickets for the price of ten. Tickets are available for sale in the mornings before and after school by the Dorris Place entrance gate. Why pay full price? Get your pre-sale tickets today. This special offer ends at 8am on Friday, October 26 and tickets purchased during the Fall Festival will be at full price. Our kids deserve a music program and remember all proceeds from the Fall Festival go to the upcoming instrumental music program.
