Many thanks to all of you who helped out with the Tiger Training Day Fitness Fair & Walkathon. The kids had a great time and asked when we are planning to do it again! The parents and community people who participated also enjoyed the event (who doesn’t love Zumba?!) Even after this success, though, we are still working to raise money for the Physical Education Program fund to hire a P.E. teacher.

This week we are selling raffle tickets for $1 each for a chance to win a red Schwinn Falcon youth bicycle. Just in time for summer! Imagine your child whizzing down the street in such style. Plus it even comes with a matching helmet. In addition, to the bike grand prize we also have a special 3 month ($199 retail value) membership to 24 Hour Fitness – a great prize for a parent or a friend.

Tickets are available this week before and after school and the raffle winners will be announced at this Friday’s (June 15th) assembly. Please buy tickets for you, your children, your friends, your neighbors, your family, etc. Good luck!

We have an awesome art filled week at Dorris Place.   The arts serve as a critical component to a complete education and are proven to increase student academic achievement. Young people who consistently participate in comprehensive, sequential, and rigorous arts programs are:

• 4 times more likely to be recognized for academic achievement
• 3 times more likely to be elected to class office within their schools
• 4 times more likely to participate in a math and science fair
• 3 times more likely to win an award for school attendance
• 4 times more likely to win an award for writing an essay or poem

For many of America’s youth, public schools serve as the major provider of formalized arts instruction. Therefore, it is critical that the arts maintain their status as a core academic subject within a school district’s educational mission and that they are adequately funded.  Show your support for the arts at this week’s events.

Students, parents, teachers, staff, alumni, family, friends, artists, and community members – you are all invited to join us for the Dorris Place Art Expo.  It is FREE admission where you can experience what it might have been like for Michelangelo to paint the Sistine Chapel, discover how Da Vinci’s knowledge in science, nature, music, and writing influenced his art, and more.  There will be

• Hands-on and interactive art demos and stations for kids and adults
• Baked treats and beverages for sale
• Art Walk of Dorris Place Student Art
• Meet local artists
• Explore and get inspired!
